Easter is one of the biggest Slovak holidays of the year. That's why we gave it plenty of attention and prepared a variety of activities for children and young people.
We opened the Easter programme with a family treasure hunt, The Adventures of Peter Rabbit. The weather wasn't on our side that day, but we saw it through to the end anyway.
The children's afternoons were filled with creative workshops, group games and Easter baking. The children made Easter wreaths, bunnies and tasty Ukrainian Easter pastries. All these events were prepared for the children by our foreign volunteers Paula, Máša and Pinja.
We tested our knowledge of Easter traditions from 4 different countries in the Easter international quiz. Did you know that Latvians burn swings at Easter so that witches can't swing on them? Or that Easter grass in Finland symbolises the awakening of spring, or that Ukrainians celebrate Easter a week after us? The quiz was full of really interesting facts.
On Green Thursday we got a little closer to our neighbours in Ukraine. Our volunteer Máša at our International Evening in the garden introduced us to Ukraine. We learned about customs and traditions, discovered music and dances and, last but not least, tasted delicious national dishes – borscht, sweet pirohy with sour cherries and more.
Easter water-splashing didn't spare our foreign volunteers, who got to experience first-hand a tradition found in none of the countries they come from. We hope the litres of water from our lads will bring them health and beauty for the next hundred years :D.
We hope you too had a peaceful holiday with your loved ones, and we look forward to more events together.
