On Saturday 24 May 2025, a volunteer event called “Help at the Ranch” took place in Toporec as part of Slovakia-wide Volunteering Week. 22 volunteers gathered at the Vlčí Grund ranch and together worked more than 220 hours. They spent the whole day on odd jobs that would normally take several days – raking grass around the fences, cleaning the paddocks, painting wood for the construction of a new stable, tidying up and looking after the animals.

The Vlčí Grund ranch is home to five horses, two dogs and twelve cats, so there was plenty of work to go around. The volunteers took on the tasks with enthusiasm and managed a great number of jobs that noticeably improved the cleanliness and functioning of the grounds. They helped not only the animals, but also the team that looks after the ranch every day.

The event was organised by the civic association Expression o. z. (FACE CLUB) in cooperation with the Prešov Volunteer Centre and the Vlčí Grund riding grounds. Their shared goal was to create an opportunity to involve people in a meaningful activity in nature, where every bit of help is truly felt.

After a job well done, the participants enjoyed a shared barbecue – sausages, chicken drumsticks, meat patties, vegetables, fruit, fruit tea and homemade apple strudel. During the more relaxed part of the programme, several volunteers also tried horse riding, which was an unforgettable experience for many.

The volunteer Saturday at the ranch showed that even one day of work can bring visible results – not only for the place that needs help, but also for the people who decide to do something for others. Everyone left the ranch with not only the feeling of a job well done, but also new experiences and friendships.
