Community eco-garden project successfully completed
Thanks to the Green Oases (Zelené oázy) grant call from the Ekopolis Foundation and Slovnaft a.s., we managed to renovate and improve the garden below FACE CLUB.
Work on the garden went on throughout the summer. We managed to restore the retaining wall, clad it with stones and point it. We planted several kinds of berry bushes and strawberries, which gave us their first harvest during the summer. From old wood we built raised beds, which we filled and planted with herbs, perennials and other annual plants. Together with the town of Spišská Belá, we brought in new soil, levelled the ground and sowed new grass. We improved the fence behind the gazebo by planting climbing ivy. We bought a garden composter so that we would have a place for cut grass and dead plants. We involved the children in looking after the garden and its plants too. During the summer camp, we made an insect hotel and bird drinking troughs for the garden's residents, much needed on hot summer days.
Where possible, several activities also took place in the garden. We believe that from next year, once proper grass has grown, our garden will be fully used by the wider community.
You can see what the garden looked like before and what it looks like now in the photos below. Almost 20 volunteers took part in restoring the garden, giving it not only their free time and energy but, above all, a piece of their hearts. They also picked up new skills in various areas – pointing, stone cladding, building beds and so on. We thank all the volunteers involved and the town employees from the bottom of our hearts – you did a huge amount of good work, see for yourselves.
This project took place thanks to financial support from the Ekopolis Foundation and Slovnaft a.s. under the Green Oases programme.
