10 December 1948 – Paris – UN General Assembly
On this exceptional day, government representatives of the member states of the United Nations adopted an important document – the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which was of decisive importance for anchoring human rights in post-war Europe.
Since then, we have commemorated 10 December as International Human Rights Day.
However, not everyone feels like celebrating on this day. Take, for example, a person who is imprisoned for protecting natural resources, or a person who has been convicted of inciting unrest, although they were only doing their job as a journalist and truthfully informing their readers.
You have just read about two of the six cases covered by the Letter-Writing Marathon. The Letter-Writing Marathon is the largest human rights event in the world, during which millions of solidarity letters and petitionsare written and sent, calling for justice for people who are unjustly imprisoned, oppressed and persecuted. You can take part too!
For young people aged 16-19 we are preparing an online workshop, where we will discuss this year's Marathon cases, reflect on what human rights violations occur in each case and, above all, show that each and every one of us can be an agent of change and improve the situation of people who are thousands of kilometres away from us.
The event takes place on Tuesday 14 December from 18:00 to 19:30 via the ZOOM platform.

Anyone who is interested can take part in the Letter-Writing Marathon. You will find all the information you need at https://maraton.amnesty.sk/
So write a letter and change someone's life!
