The English day camp Journey into Space was prepared for the children by international volunteer Pinja from Finland. This camp was designed for younger children who are just starting with English.

What are the planets of our solar system?

During the camp the children explored the character of the planets. They found out, for example, why Mercury has the most craters and how such craters form in the first place. Or why storms are frequent on Jupiter. They then painted each planet, trying to keep its colours and imitate its surface. They also “collected” samples from all the planets. For example, from Venus they “obtained” a lava rock, because Venus is known for having lots of volcanoes.

There were also group games and a space experiment

Every day included group games that strengthened relationships within the group, as well as a fun experiment in which the participants built several space rockets and then “launched them into space.” Believe it or not, the rockets really flew.

We finished the English camp with a trip to the planetarium

Where else would we go, right? At the planetarium in Prešov, two interactive programmes helped us learn even more about space. We found out what astronaut training for a journey into space involves, how a rocket launches and how it returns to Earth. In the second programme we learned a bit more about the sun, the moon and the stars. At the end of the programme we refreshed our newly gained knowledge in a short quiz, bought souvenirs, received a badge as a reward and headed back home, where we stopped for ice cream.

Our space adventure was truly fantastic!
